In my opinion, in both the book and the show it's left up to your interpretation. Keeping in spoiler tags for book and show spoilers: I personally think that Matthew and Kit had some sexual encounters (in the book Kit talks about how they had a threesome with a sex worker) but that for Matthew it was only ever a bit of fun.
