In Season 3, Kelvin's and Keefe's relationship — though not outwardly romantic — is put to the test. As they organize a group known as the "Smut Busters" in order to shut down local sex shops by buying out their stocks, they look after adolescent kids as part of their operations. Kelvin Gemstone (Adam DeVine) is the third and youngest child of Eli and Aimee-Leigh Gemstone. He is the only one among the Gemstone siblings who is neither married nor in a relationship.

In various interviews, DeVine has described his character as a man-child. And if there’s any character in television history who would claim he’s suffering from “SSA,” it’s Kelvin Gemstone, a man who seems content — for now, at least — to intimately cohabitate with another man without consummating or even labeling the relationship.

I’d love to see a storyline about how the Gemstone family reacts to Kelvin possibly being gay. The Gemstone family ministry is Southern Baptist, and that’s generally not an LGBTQ-affirming denomination of Christianity. Hallelujah and pass the glitter — everyone’s favorite gay Christian couple has officially tied the knot!

The Righteous Gemstones, HBO’s sharp, satirical comedy about evangelical megachurch shenanigans, wrapped its four-season run in with a finale that left fans both cheering and (let’s be honest) a little teary-eyed. As lovable as we find the antics of the Gemstones — primarily the children of Eli John Goodman and the late Aimee-Leigh Jennifer Nettles , Jesse Danny McBride , Judy Edi Patterson , and Kelvin Adam Devine — the show doesn't water down the corrupt nature of evangelicalism or the many contradictions involved in a streamlined, for profit Christianity.

He and Keefe are inseparable, increasingly finding ways to put their hands on one another — workouts, massages, and general masculine grapples. It eventually becomes clear that whatever is happening between Kelvin and Keefe pulls at Keefe a little harder. I wanna see where this road leads for that incredible being.

Kelvin has an interesting line to walk on The Righteous Gemstones. But the world the Gemstones inhabit is not a kind one. Where the Gemstones are spoiled and immature, others of their ilk are downright hateful. Season 3 raises the stakes for Kelvin and his siblings after they survive a kidnapping and arguably near-death experience at the hands of Peter Montgomery Steve Zahn and his militia.

As the Gemstones head to the stage for their first service after the ordeal, Kelvin makes the bold choice to kiss Keefe. It demonstrates that for Kelvin, no new page can be added to the Book of the Gemstones without including Keefe, but also, to a greater extent, without including his true self. Season 4 has gone on to explore their newly established romance — but in doing so, it digs deeper into Kelvin's identity as a whole, and the challenge that evangelicalism presents to him, not just on a personal level, but on a systemic one.

In the penultimate episode of "The

Even with the success and community of Prism, Kelvin struggles to live authentically. This clearly — and reasonably — rattles Kelvin, and by the following episode, we see why. Episode 6 flashes back to the Gemstones in their childhood , and the chaos that ensues after a traumatic break-in contributes to Kelvin's repression long into adulthood.

By the time Kelvin steps up to the podium before the final round of voting for Top Christ Following Man, the other nominees, Vance Simkins included, have preceded him with testimonies rooted in self-victimization and self-aggrandizing. Instead of following their lead, Kelvin speaks from the heart. Emphasizing truth, he shares that he became a preacher at age I spent my whole life trying not to be until I realized: God sees the real me.

In fact, he made the real me. Against the over-the-top backdrop of the awards ceremony, in the shiniest suit a show of evangelical fashion has ever seen, Kelvin Gemstone proposes that it is good — and Godly — to be different. A beautiful man. A gay Top Christ Following Man. He walks off-stage, having not done what he came to do, but what needed to be done.

Kelvin has realized that his needs — as a gay man, as a youth pastor, and as a follower of Christ — are already met by his own actions and exist independent of accolades or acceptance, and his words clearly register with many. The public votes for the flamboyant, boyish charmer who serves a congregation of openly queer people. With this powerful scene, Kelvin becomes much more than a caricature or a punchline as The Righteous Gemstones prepares to close the book on this dysfunctional family.
